Local Flow
<<ROBERT FORSTER
MULTI-PLATFORM
The Elephant & Wheelbarrow Hotel continues its commitment to fostering local music with its Jack Daniels Platform program, now on two nights a week. Catch Brisbane’s best unsigned bands duelling it out every Tuesday night, while the previous month’s winners take to the stage each Thursday. Naturally, you’re the real winner - one lucky punter in attendance on Thursday September 30 will take home a Jack Daniels Electric Guitar!
15 SONGS
One of Brisbane’s most innovative performance spaces, QUT Festival Theatre (at Brisbane Powerhouse), plays host to one of Brisbane’s most celebrated musical sons, Robert Forster, on Saturday September 18. He’ll be playing 15 Songs About Brisbane - you think he might fit a Go-Betweens number or two in there?
STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
Brisbane four-piece Little Scout have been rubbing some mighty prestigious shoulders lately. Not only are they recording their debut LP this month with Jonathon Boulet on mixing and engineering duties, but they’re supporting Clare Bowditch and Glenn Richards (Augie March) at Surfers Paradise Beer Garden on October 7, The Hi-Fi on October 8 and Toowoomba’s Irish Club on October 10.
WHITE NOISE
Belfast-born, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Andy White carries a 12-string guitar under his arm and wears his particular brand of Irish charm on his sleeve. Which, let’s face it, must get uncomfortable after awhile, so it’s probably just as well he’ll be sitting down to play some tunes at The Troubadour this Sunday September 5 with The Stress Of Leisure.
WOLF-GIRL POWER
Three powerful female acts graduating from QUT’s Music program - Dana Gerhman, Ivy May Dillon and Elly Dear - headline the Night Of The She-Wolf at The Zoo on Thursday September 3. They’ll be supported by Indigo Kids, who are neither female (for the most part) or able to transform into wolves (for the most part).
RE:TALE
Local electro-pop cartel re:enactment might have come up with the soundtrack to your summer in new single ‘Problematic’. It features on their new double A-Side single, ‘Talent For Retail’. They’ll get you dancing (or at least shuffling awkwardly) at The Troubadour on Saturday September 18 with Hunz, Moon Jog and Toy Balloon.
WEBB SLINGER
Dan Webb is a 21-year-old alternative rock force to be reckoned with. Eschewing electric guitars altogether (who needs them?), Webb rocks out on the keys on sophomore EP ‘Hyperspace Clearance’. Kids will be throwing out their guitars after he plays Ric’s on Wednesday September 22.
EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE
In one of the greatest promotions of all time (or at least this week), Brisbane retro poppers Trip Sinister will adopt one Orangutan for every $200 brought in by their new single, ‘Dancin’ With The Black Top’. They hope to adopt ten of the endangered creatures, and presumably dress them in adorable outfits and raise them as a family.
LONDON CALLING
The freedom fighters at Happy High Herbs already own stores in Fortitude Valley and Southport, so the next logical step was obviously London. Wait, what? The Camden Loch Stables Market store opens on September 18; if you’re keen for a working holiday or looking to supply products overseas, email mcgregory3@optusnet.com.au
CHECK YOUR PULSE
Fortitude Valley PCYC and The Hive host the On The Pulse Festival on Saturday October 23. The all-ages, drug-and-alcohol-free event (meaning there’s no drugs and alcohol, not that they’re free) features Finabah, Flicks, The Monster Goes Rawrr, Burning Brooklyn, Words Versing Verses, Drawcard, Autumn Heartache, The City Shake Up, Cold And Need, Trashqueen, Bixby Canyon, Calais, Starting Sunday and more.
