So, what are you planning for your Trip, Kicks set? C'mon, let the cat outta the bag!
As I play 99 percent vinyl I will probably drop some of my latest bombs by the likes of Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Herve & Noob, with a few random old skool house remixes thrown in for good measure.
Did your early years playing in punk bands influence your DJing style?
Definitely. I always try to include elements of what I consider to be punk now when I play. To me punk is an attitude in music and is as strong as it has ever been. I like to break the rules when I'm DJing or at least bend them a little to create something new. Playing safe is boring.
Living in Byron Bay; surely it can't be all sweet living, right?
Nah, there has been a lot floods recently in my neck of the woods and despite being the captain I don't really like going down with the ship. It beats living in a crack ghetto though I guess. Byron is such a transient place I just love the diversity of artistic culture that exists here.
The list of artists you've supported over the years is impressive; any memorable moments you can regale us with?
I'd have to say playing with Felix Da Housecat in the Backroom was quite a mind altering experience for me. Watching him from side of stage totally changed my perception of DJing. The way he was mixing disco with techno was quite amazing.
You have your own studio - what do you look for in a track that's going make it shake the dancefloor?
It’s all about the bassline for me. That’s what really seems to move people including myself. Makes it jiggy. Although I'm quite partial to a soulful vocal or high octane rap in the right place.
Are you a fan of incorporating samples into your original productions?
Yeah I have been know to include a few snippets from my vinyl vault in a track or two. Creative use of a sample can sometimes take your tune somewhere you never expected. I like to remain open minded when considering options in the studio. My mixmaster likes to blend a little old with the new at times.
