Brotherly Love
Their partnership may have been realised in the family home, but brother duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have toured their unique set across the globe.
With Greek heritage, a Belgium upbringing and strong ties in Ibiza, how would you say these respective cultures have influenced your music?
(Mike) It’s been good for us to have been in contact with so many cultures and see how different countries experience and react to music. Greece and Belgium are very different in that way: for example, the Greeks have a very strong love for their own music and will just blend in touches of international hits to their own pop tracks, whereas the Belgians will mostly just listen to international music.
Do you think your brotherly relationship is more of a help or hindrance to your art?
(Mike) Would definitely say a help. You can be 100 percent honest with your brother and say if something is good or not, so the result in the studio gets better.
(Dimitri) We might have the odd little fight or so, but we clear that up quickly.
(Mike) After a little boxing match.
Obviously you have a great musical partnership going, but would either of you consider pursuing a solo career?
(Dimitri) Not at this point. We're in it together and we're building on that. But you never know what the future brings. We might do the one-off solo project. Mike actually released a solo track a few months ago.
While you have worked with some respected names in the industry, you are also building a reputation for productions under your own name. Is this something you wish to explore further in the future?
(Dimitri) For sure. We are now working on our album and some very big collaborations. We aim to have our album ready for summer and release it in fall of 2011.
(Mike) We're especially excited about the collaborations; some big things in the making. I still can't believe we're doing them.
How would you describe your live shows?
(Dimitri) Very mashed up. We play a lot of tracks and keep the mixes up-tempo.
(Mike) We try to entertain the crowd with a good mixture of styles.
What's your secret to getting the crowd going?
(Dimitri) Improvise I guess; it’s good that I have Mike on the mic to give it the extra 'push'!
