Brisbane has been graced with some extremely talented hard dance producers in the last few years, but none have achieved the kind of global dominance of Jody 6. Hitting play on a Jody 6 track is like being stuck with a needle of pure adrenaline. It’s 150BPM, it’s dark, twisted and it means business.

Jody on the other hand seems to be the antithesis of the music he produces. Laidback, modest and softly spoken, Jody is pretty blunt when it comes to explaining his passion for hard dance.

“I find trance and house a bit slow and boring. Hard dance has so much more energy and an uplifting feel to it,” Jody says.

To say that Jody is a quiet achiever within the Australian hard dance scene is an understatement. He’s the first Australian producer to be signed to Paul Glazby’s seminal Vicious Circle label, he’s one of the most in-demand hard house DJs in the southern hemisphere, yet in his own country he sometimes struggles to find an audience.

“Yeah, I find it funny how I have a bigger profile overseas than in my own country. I just played at a wicked event in Tokyo called NRGetic Romancer and I’m looking forward to playing at Frantic in Auckland and Déjà vu in Christchurch next month.”

Much of this is down to Australia’s current obsession with hard style. Jody hopes that with the cyclical nature of dance music, there will be a changing of the guard sometime soon. “Hard house was the leading hard dance genre in Australia a few years back so I’m hoping that it comes back around again.”

Signs of a hard house resurgence in Australia are already on the horizon. Brisbane’s own Renewable NRG has grown and developed into one of the country’s leading hard house labels and Jody has been part of the ‘family’ since their inception almost two years ago. With another track about to drop on the label titled ‘Hard House Til I Die’ (a tongue-in-check reference to the mantra of hardcore punters), Jody 6 and Renewable NRG look set to re-educate dancefloors across the country and set the wheels in motion for a hard house revolution.
