Not Working

It’s music that’s good for anytime of the week. Their unique electro twist makes the music twice as good - throw in a little Californian sunshine and you’ve got the quintessential LAZRtag sound. If only all music could be this innocent and fun.

First lads, tell us how you got your start in music and how you met?
(Erik) I started out picking up instruments at a young age, playing in a few bands; I later found myself fascinated with electronic music, which inspired me to start producing my own material. Vinh started off as a resident DJ in LA, later found himself wanting to put out his own material as well.

What’s your approach to production? Is one of you the brains and the other the beauty?!
(Erik) We both do the production work, the same when it comes to DJing. Sometimes we'll finish tracks independently and the rest of the time we both work on the same tune.

What’s been happening in the studio?
(Vinh) We paused doing remixes. For now we are focusing on original tracks all to be released under Vicious. We're just not sure if we're going to push singles or release an EP. stay tuned!

What’s your philosophy and approach to music? All fun and games or...
(Erik) If it begins to feel like work, then you're doing something wrong. At the same time you want to keep focus on the things you need to finish. After all, the fun and games are  ‘the cherry on the top’.

What’s the scene like in the US at the moment?
(Erik) Hugeeee!!!! There is so much going on in LA right now, you can have Chris Lake and Rusko at the Avalon, Diplo at the Vanguard and Reid Speed at The MusicBox all within a block from each other. Insane... right? There’s at least one festival going on every month.

What are some of your inspirations in 2011?
(Vinh) We both feel like electro house is getting big again, which is really exciting. Not that it was dying or anything, but it seemed like the focus was moving to other genres. Having to reinvent ourselves and an ever changing sound is a pretty big challenge. Hearing other artists making waves in the scene is definitely something that motivates and inspires us.

Are you seeing that cross genre pollination going on in sets and productions?
(Vinh) Hell yes! And I love every bit of it. I think the days of artists sticking to only certain genres is long gone. I love when other DJs can throw down something different every once in a while to mix it up a bit.

If you had to, how would you describe your style and sound?
(Vinh) Like Transformers having sex. Haha. Lots of heavy distorted basslines, a few wobbles here and there, layered synths, and some proggy chords. You can certainly hear influences from other EDM genres in our music.

Finally what can we expect from you on tour?
(Vinh) We're about midway through our tour and it has been amazing so far. During our second stop into Gosford, three fights broke out on the dancefloor. Definitely not a fan of the fighting, but people seem to be raging to our sets. Haha.
