If you could bring only one element from the ‘90s clubbing scene into modern dance culture, what would it be? HEART. I don't see enough heart in today's scene. If there’s a quick fix the new DJs take it ... Newcomers hide behind fake DJ bios - I remember a time when a DJ bio listed facts, not fiction ... I love technology and I think it's great for the future of DJing, but it's also giving birth to a bunch of clueless button pushers who care more about dressing cool and having thousands of friends on Facebook than sitting at home teaching themselves the craft of making people dance on the weekend.
In your last interview with Scene you revealed you once meet Duran Duran at 15; what does an experience like that do for a young guy looking to get into the music industry?
At a young age, both females and males need role models; meeting a role model gives them HOPE. As a youngster being in the presence of Duran Duran excited me, watching how they entertained a crowd inspired my goals and fuelled my aspirations.
You’ll be playing a new venue - Mansfield Entertainment Centre - in a couple of weeks time; with the decline of venues around the country, it must be nice to play to a new room, particularly one that’s situated in suburbia?
I can’t wait. I always get excited when I get to play a new room; it’s a new challenge, plus I get to party on a Wednesday night - wooohoooo!!!
Where is the next Skitzmix at?
‘Skitzmix 38’ is now in stores and I’m just about to start ‘Skitzmix 39’; I’ve also got a solo album coming out early next year.
At the end of your DJing career, your epitaph will read what?
C’mon, I know I'm old but I'm not ready to die yet - let me get to ‘Skitzmix 50’ and then ask me the same question. See you all next week at the Mansfield for a drink.
Nick Skitz will play the Mansfield Entertainment Centre on Wednesday August 24 for Mad House’s Ultimate Weekly Student Party.
