GLORIOUS GLITCH
Last in Australia for this year’s Groovin The Moo festival, Liverpool indie-rockers The Wombats are coming back, again.
Since releasing their sophomore record, ‘This Modern Glitch’, in April, The Wombats have been globetrotting in celebration of its release. With singles ‘Toyko (Vampires & Wolves)’, ‘Jump Into The Fog’ and ‘Techno Fan’ smashing the UK singles chart, ‘This Modern Glitch’ hit the indie-pop-rock jackpot and 2011 has seen the band rise to superstardom - they even had to withdraw from the WA leg of Groovin The Moo earlier this year after being asked to perform at the BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.
“We started touring in March and it still feels kind of new and fresh,†bassist Tord Overland-Knudsen says down the line from London, in a strange accent that embraces his Norwegian roots and a clipped Liverpool cadence.
“I guess we've also added a few new songs which obviously helps to keep it fresh but it just keeps getting better and we've added some more production to the show which makes it look a lot nicer as well - visuals and some lasers, it's looking big.â€
Aside from their live show, the lads have whipped up some epic video clips, their latest in celebration of new single ‘1996’. Think a scuba/ snorkelling themed house party with bottled water on offer and '90s nostalgic themes permeating each shot. Knudsen says it was intended to showcase '90s memorabilia in a subtle execution.
“It was filmed in London in this really, really weird house,†Knudsen says. “I think it was in Earl's Court… it had lots of weird things going on - the door handles were like hands from boats and it had all this weird gear from boats.â€
Although Knudsen says The Wombats was initially “more of a joke†and that “as a band I thought we were pretty rubbish at the timeâ€, Knudsen was happy to show his family his ‘day job’ a few weeks back when they played a show in Elverum
“It was the weirdest thing ever, my two lives were crossing paths,†he says. “My mum was making food and then drove me down to the gig. It was a very, very strange day.â€
The Wombats play the Brisbane Riverstage this Thursday, October 13. They then return in 2012 as part of Future Music Festival, at Doomben Racecourse, March 3.
