Veteran hip hop and disco DJ Kon is set to take Brisbane by storm with his retro style.
Kon will be spinning the hits of the ‘70s at the Red Bull Music Academy Rooftop Roller Disco.
The music of that era is hardly uncharted territory for the Boston-born DJ.
"I grew up with it and I used to rollerskate a lot in '79, '80, so it's right up my alley,” he says.
"My parents introduced me to all kinds of different music. My father was a drummer, and they were just avid record collectors. That kind of did it, you know? That was when I was probably about three, four years old.
"I was playing my father's records, you know, for adults that would be over, and I always had vinyl. My whole life I would always go to the record store... I think really, to be technical, I was already DJing then."
Having a musical family is always a bonus for a budding young artist, but this wasn't the only thing that inspired Kon to take up the art professionally.
"What ended up happening is, there was a movie called 'Wild Style', and there is a scene with Grandmaster Flash in the kitchen with two turntables and a mixer. I saw that in 1984, and it just clicked.
"In 1985, my grandmother bought me my first mixer that allowed two turntables to be hooked up at the same time, and that was it.
"I've been doing this long enough to see cycles of things and everything goes back to basics, everything. Disco, as you see, this year was a really big disco summer. You had 'Get Lucky' become a huge hit. I mean, it's come full circle again.
"I think that at the end of the day all roads lead to disco."
DJ Kon plays The Red Bull Music Academy Rooftop Roller Disco at Wilson Car Park in Chinatown as part of Valley Fiesta on November 23.
