“It's very humbling. This sounds weird but I don't think of myself as a girl DJ, if you know what I mean. If you've got skills, then make use of your skills, that's how I see it.â€
She does indeed put her skills to good use, playing at Sydney's best urban clubs and supporting some of the biggest names in today's hip hop scene, including Snoop Dogg and Ne-Yo. This mixing maestro even gets to hang out with the stars after the show.
“It's surreal. They're just normal people. They'd be someone I could hang out with if they lived in Australia. Like Pitbull when he came a few years ago. He was just like a guy who wanted to party and have fun. He gave me his number so I could interview him.â€
It hasn't always been such a smooth ride for this lady DJ, as she got her start after travelling overseas to get her head together.
“My friend's brother was a DJ and we used to support him in battles and that and I asked him if he could teach me how to scratch. He was the worst teacher ever, so I was stubborn and determined to learn on my own. So I was like 'Fine. I'm going to buy equipment and learn in Australia.' And I did.â€
After sneaking equipment into her room, teaching herself to scratch and secretly doing nightclub gigs, Flygirl Tee finally faced up to her not-so-supportive parents, with a child-to-parent tete-a-tete.
“They don't argue with me as much because they know it's my job. But I think they would prefer me to be like a normal, average daughter who has a nine-to-five job or whatever, but I don't think I could do it. I think it would kill me.â€
