Heavily influenced by their Kabi Kabi heritage, The Last Kinection's profound love for rap and reggae rubs off onto their listeners. Aiming to lyrically, musically and energetically motivate fans to connect with each song, these guys have figured out how to make phat beats on an evocative level.
Consisting of Jacob Turner (DJ Jaytee) and brother and sister duo Joel (Weno) and Naomi Wenitong, TLK's formation was a matter of luck. "Jaytee and I were in another group called Local Knowledge and Naomi was one half of the pop sensation Shakaya," explains Joel. "Both groups split at about the same time, so we saw it as a great opportunity to form a family group."
TLK have a busy year ahead, with a hectic schedule based around the release of their debut album, 'Nutches'.
"The album features an array of artists from Urthboy from The Herd, through to Brotha Black and Radical Son," tells Joel. "It has a whole lot of different songs on it, which will relate to all listeners in one way or another."
With a lot of the inspiration drawn from their own lives, the album was named after their grandmother Nutches. "She passed away at the start of last year," says Joel. "And she was the last connection to our mob, so we named it after her. A lot of the songs are about things our family have gone through and personal things we have encountered."
With females not being common members of hip hop groups, Joel says Naomi's talents bring something different to the table. "She can sing and rap really well which makes us a lot different," he says. "We work really well together. Song lyrics work between us and we perform well together on stage."
Performing at this year’s Stylin' Up festival, Joel says it will be a little celebration for the group. "Our first gig was actually Stylin' Up three years ago! We've all come a long way since then. Jaytee is now better than me! He burns me on the turntables now!" laughs Joel. Joel says Stylin' Up is a great festival, as it is open and more accessible for indigenous artists to show their skills. "It also has a great family atmosphere. A lot of the artists wouldn't otherwise get the chance to show off their talents."
The Last Kinection play at Inala's Stylin' Up festival May 30. ‘Nutches’ is out now and available through all good record stores.
