ADALITA
ROCKIN THE SUBURBS

Often when one band member breaks away to pursue an individual musical career, the original band gets put on the backburner. For Magic Dirt's Adalita, that couldn't be further from the truth.

The band's lead singer has recently experienced her first foray into the solo scene, recording two songs for the soundtrack of the upcoming Australian indie flick, 'Suburban Mayhem'.

"It feels great, we're usually just a live band, playing on the road ... so when opportunities like this come along it's really fun for us to do," Adalita explains.

"We [Magic Dirt] had the two tracks on the film and were really excited about that, but I wasn't expecting to be asked to sing on my own."

Adalita was asked to cover 'Double Dare' by Hoyt Axton and 'Sex Beat' by The Gun Club, with the latter destined to be released as a single.

"It was a pretty spontaneous thing on the day, and then it [Sex Beat] ended up on the soundtrack. And then the next thing it was like ok, it's going to be a single, cool. Ok, wanna do a clip? Ok, cool. It was all just bang, bang, bang and all happened really quickly; but it was lots of fun," she says.

The singer's connection to 'Suburban Mayhem' is her second venture into the film arena, following her debut in 'The Desert'. So does the seasoned musician have any aspirations to move into acting?

"It's not something I actively seek out, I definitely don't want to be an actress, it's not a dream of mine. I'm actually horrified at the thought of becoming an actress or doing acting."

That's a no then.

Adalita is also quick to point out that while she enjoyed her solo stint, it's not something she's ready to pursue just yet.

"Oh you know, people talk to me about it so I kind of end up thinking about doing solo stuff but it's not really the right time at the moment, I'm so busy with the band."

For now, Adalita's sights are firmly set on her future with Magic Dirt.

"We're having a lot of fun at the moment, we were kind of overworked in the last few years ... but we've had a break from that, we're just writing and getting back to basics and connecting to why we were doing it in the first place. We've just recorded an EP, so that's coming out hopefully on this tour - then a mini album, that's next, and then the album, and then more touring. It's gonna be a big year."

'Suburban Mayhem' opens nationally on October 26. The film's soundtrack is available now.
