THE BIRD [09:04:08]
DELEGATING THE REMIX
To most people, the idea of handing over their work to be cut, chopped, mixed and mashed is difficult to embrace. But for electronic experimentalists The Bird however, they see it not as a destruction of their work, but more of a re-imagining.
That’s why they had no problem handing over their songs to people from across the country, such as Spoonbill and the Resin Dogs, to help craft their new album 'Re-inventions'.
"I called up a few friends, and people we have worked with before, and said 'we want to make this kind of a record where we get people to remix stuff and would you be into it',” Simon Durrington, who takes control of the keys for the band, says.
“I also got people recommended … so I just rang them and said 'I don't know you, but I am from this band and this is what I am doing and I would love you to be involved and collaborate on this level and would you be in to it?”
This sort of informal approach shows that The Bird, who’ve been around the traps for more than a decade, have the ability to branch out and can grow like an organic musical beast. And while it seems they’re enjoying some free time having delegated the remixing work, The Bird boys have been busy working on new material.
"It is the multi-tasking sort of thing where you tour one record and are promoting it, but in the background you are working on a new thing; we have already been in to the studio and recorded the new record," Durrington said.
"It still has quite a Bird flavour, but it is pushing these other boundaries we have always wanted to do. And we are really excited about it … we will definitely be releasing it around September."
But for now their focus is on their tour for 'Re-inventions'; and while the remixed versions of tunes will get an airing, Durrington said another reason to get your tail feather shaking down to the show will be to hear the freshly-cracked material.
"Some people have introduced certain elements where we think 'oh wow, that is really cool, we should try and play that out', but because we have just been in the studio, and written a lot of material, that is really our live focus."
