IN THE MOOD [19:03:08]
BITCHSLAP
Voted in at No.1 on the Triple J Unearthed Punk Charts, Sydney’s Bitchslap take no prisoners in a live show that evokes such terms as “sweet hell” and “honest fury”. We caught up with singer Jess Coram prior to their Brisbane show.
Punk is what? Dead? Dying? Better than ever? …
I don’t think it could ever die really. I see it as an attitude, an expression. There will always be too much happening in the world that people will want to rally against, stand up for and say a big f%#k you to.
Punk ‘punch’? What in your music does that refer to?
I think the music as a whole. Our music has a punchy feel to it. It has been described as very in your face which is what we want.
Eat-shit-and-die lyrics! Just what are your songs about?
I write and sing about issues and experiences that have had a strong affect on me, so the lyrics have a sting to them you could say. It’s my release and how I get to say how I really feel and think.
Not exactly piano ballads huh? Tell us about the live show?
We like to play with a lot of energy. This is when we get to really let loose and have fun. It’s a thrill to see people getting into it and getting something out of our music as much as we do.
Are you living ‘the life’ on tour or is it straight to bed with a self-help book straight after the shows?
That all depends on how good a rider we get. Haha. We usually try and sell our merch so we can put petrol in the van to get to the next show.
Getting your tune ‘Give Me Back My Life’ voted No.1 on the Triple J Unearthed Punk Charts must have been a thrill?
Yes it was great to see that we have people out there supporting us and to know that does make what we are doing feel appreciated.
You have just signed a deal right? Tell us about it?
Brian from RiSH Records heard our song ‘Give Me My Life Back’ on Triple J Unearthed. He approached us about doing a single iTunes release and from there we decided to put our EP out through RiSH. Working with an indie label is awesome because it gives us the freedom to do things on our terms.
