DJ BONEZ [05:09:07]
HEADS UP
DJ Bones is sick, fully sick! Well he's got a bad cold anyway. Coming down the line from Melbourne, his thickened voice make's him sound like a westie gangsta. Which is kind of apt, because he does have an offer you can't refuse.
The offer you can't refuse is his new album 'Roll Call', it's a cracker! Totally original beats with an impressive line-up of guest MCs all in top form. The good time groove is set by the funk-drenched intro. I asked Bonez if he had a masterplan for the album.
"I wasn't making it from like the beginning track to the very very end track. I was making tracks here and there and just trying to figure out what I had in my hand at that moment. But yeah, the intro's really important. Basically you gotta set the mood for the record, so I didn't want anythng too offensive, nothing to in-your face. That's basically the gist of the whole record. It's got a bit of variety, it's easy to get and it's got a bit of bounce. Y'know that's what I'm about."
The guest MCs come from far and wide in what is a truly international record. Lotek from the UK, the masterful Grand Agent from the US and Oz spitters from all over, including righteous contributions from Brisneyland's own Tommy Illfigga and Rainman.
Arguably Bonez's biggest score is getting the Sandpeople on board. I asked him how he managed it.
"Well with Sandpeople, I have done collabs on Pegz's album [and I heard this MC], so just listening to him I'm like, 'damn! this guy's alright', y'know, so I looked him up on the net ... I realised he was mixed up with a few other artists and groups that altogether are known as the Sandpeople. So I sent them a couple of beats and they picked this one and I just went 'fo sure, cool', and they just danked it out in like two months and when I heard it I was just like 'yeah nice' . So the deal is I'll hook'em up with some tracks and now we have this communication thing where we help each other out. And I've never even met the guy yet but we're really tight. I feel like I know him better than most people I've known here for years."
Check Bonez's album out and you'll see why MCs are queuing up to work with the man.
