BOXYLUCHA [07:05:08]
CAKE ANYONE?
Local DJ / MC party ensemble Boxylucha is turning three. Having survived the terrible twos with a slew of monster events that have seen the crew play all over Brisbane, the Boxy lads are nailing down the boards at Ric’s this Friday for a serious mash-up of funky, old skool beats and dirty hip hop bombs.
“When we started Boxylucha we couldn’t find a place where we could go out and hear a cool bunch of different tunes and hang out with mates and have a few beers with friends,” muses Andy Hutch, one part of the ‘Lucha family. “Rumpus Room wasn’t around then and there weren’t places of that nature, so we wanted to start a night that was about good vibes, good times and to have silly fun. It grew from that and after our fourth gig we brought in Matt (Kleenkutt), Capital and Richi D and that’s when Boxylucha really began and took on its own shape.
“Three years later we have three MCs and a core seven or eight DJs who continually swap in and swap out. The night is always done for the passion and not about the business. There’s no real emphasis on making any cash out of it, it’s just about having a good party.”
“That’s something that makes it work so well,” interjects Kleenkutt. “Because we’re in it more for the fun than being superstar DJs and I think a lot of people respect that because they know we’re in it for the music and music only and basically to put on a good party for our friends.”
Amongst all the rollicking good times and the many crazy after parties, Hutch’s favourite Boxylucha memory isn’t quite what you’d expect it to be.
“My best Boxylucha moment was like a comic book,” he says with a hearty chuckle. “We had to set up in front of people. The venue was already full. Because I had the first set, I sweated whilst setting up then turned around and played. I wasn’t really happy because I was so stressed. Matt got out of a cab and stepped on a nail. Richi D got kicked out for tagging on the walls of the toilet doors. Then at the end of the night Luke (Cache) and I had packed up but we got locked out underneath Central Station and we got busted by the cops - we ended up climbing over a fence to get out of the place.”
