CANSEI DE SER SEXY [19:03:08]
BRAZILIAN POPSTERS
Starting as an art-cum-performance collective in Sao Paulo, CSS De Ser Sexy are Brazil's hottest export. But as Louisa Sa explains, they're a far cry from bossa nova.
How did you come up with your name (Cansei De Ser Sexy translates into 'tired of being sexy)? Is it really a Beyonce quote?
Yes, it really is! When we started the band we had no idea of what to call it. We didn't even think it would last … we were emailing each other a lot at that time because we were all working day jobs. Then Lovefoxxx (CSS singer) saw a thumbnail of Beyonce online and a quote from Beyonce saying she was tired of being sexy. We just thought, how absurd.
It seems a lot of people have taken the name as being a feminist comment, or a political statement..
(Laughs) … Yeah, it's not. We don't carry any messages. I mean, we don't stand for chauvinism or sexism or anything like that, but when we're doing the band we don't mix with politics. We're just about the music.
You guys are signed to Sub Pop, but you're not what people might think of as a typical Sub Pop band.
Sub Pop has changed a lot since the 90s. If you see their cast of bands now, from The Shins to the Postal Service, they're bands that don't produce rock. We love pop music, but we still have an underground vibe. We can be mainstream as well as underground. We love pop culture. We think it's funny.
You've got a rep for being very cutting edge, very rock n roll. Do you feel pressure to stay that way a little bit choking?
No. We never did things for anyone. Musically and artistically we've always done what we wanted so we don't really care. We care in that we want to give our best all the time. We work very hard to give a good show, it's very honest, and it's not always easy to deliver. We always try to be pop!
