Having provided club-goers with energetic and cheeky dance music for the past six years, Melbourne’s Dirty Laundry are ready to hit Australia with their next release.
While the goal for most bands is to drop that first album, the five-piece has a different perspective on the idea.
“The album concept for us has changed. When we first started the album was far more prominent. Now with digital downloads, I don’t think for electronic acts, an album is really that relevant. What we’d much prefer to do is release singles or EPs and then work those tracks with various remixes,†says Dean Cherny, who handles DJing, bass and production for the group.
“For a band that is yet to have massive chart success, by just putting an album out there, it’s just going to sit there and not do a great deal. Especially because dance music changes so quickly and sounds change.â€
Though there is no album on the horizon, Dirty Laundry have several songs currently in the works.
“They’re incredibly diverse, there’s a few downtempo tracks. We didn’t want it to be all disco pop, or dance pop, we really wanted to make it quite diverse. There are a couple that are more in the indie-tech genre with heavier guitars. There’s a couple that are very summer house tracks that’ll get the dancefloors rocking over summer. We’re really excited about the sound of what we’re producing at the moment.â€
To create their latest single, ‘Downtown Underground’, Dean and his bandmates collaborated with several emerging artists.
“It’s been really well received, we’ve been really happy with the package that we put together. We try and get a couple of up and coming DJs or producers to do remixes. And we’re really excited with some of the stuff we’ve gotten back from them. We really like that because we love giving those guys the chance to remix something that’s going to do well in the club chart.â€
With an exciting summer ahead, the Melbourne quintet will continue to work on their live sound.
“We obviously want to nail all these festivals and gigs, it’s really important for us to be up there playing. And we’re looking forward to working on a whole new live set and continuing to polish these tracks. The next single ‘Mexico’ is really going to change people’s impressions of us.â€
