Sydney-based EGO is surprised more A-List DJs aren’t getting into what he sees as the future of club music: audio visual production.
“Fatboy Slim and Moby have kind of gotten into it,” he concedes, “where they have their show fully synched up with the visuals, which I think is great, but it's used mostly as a backdrop to their set. But some guys have sort of stepped up and integrated it into their show.”
With the development in technology for audio visual production, EGO believes “people's imaginations are the limit”. He names art school favourites amongst his visual inspirations.
“I think I've always liked sample based artists who take things and rework them in a way that is very different, and that is the same with visual artists who take things and present them in different ways, people like Andy Warhol or Dali who take elements and throw them out the window or throw them back at your face.
“That's what I like to do as well, to push boundaries and push ideas and take things that people know and present them in a way that they haven't seen before. I guess I really like exploring a new way of doing things and new styles and so more often than not, videos take me a while to do.”
With too much creative energy to keep to himself, EGO is doing some workshops with the non-profit organisations ‘Bridges for Music’ and ‘Heaps Decent’ alongside his national and international tour commitments.
“I guess my background, my other life, before I started going full time with the audio visual thing was doing workshops for community groups in not-for-profits groups, teaching people digital literacy skills, you know, how to use the internet and how to use email. So it's kind of combining a skill and love that I already have with my new thing. I didn't want to go full time with the audio visual thing without giving back somewhere along the way.
“It was something I wanted to do, but something I hadn't planned on doing for a while until I had [audio visual production] sorted. But it's been a lot quicker, which has been great.”
