First up, congrats on the success of 'We No Speak Americano' - are you surprised by the difference a bit of national airplay can make?
The track’s been treated with a special type of music cocaine. Lady Gaga uses it alot, but Beyonce refuses.
Is this the sort of break that every artist needs to get to the next level in terms of an audience?
No, I wouldn't say so. Some people boil under the radar for years, without ever topping best sellers charts, but have a cult following all of whom would take a bullet for their band. That's true love, man.
Sweat It Out must be one of the more progressive dance labels in the country right now - please indulge me and tell me that Ajax swans around in a dressing gown swilling from a snifter of fine whisky ...
We wish he would wear a dressing gown, but he insists on strutting around in the buff. We tell him it’s not right and we should probably get a lawyer, but he just taps us on the shoulder and says "Ah boys, in ten years entire dancefloors will be naked, I’m just that far ahead of the curve".
Between the two of you, you have some of the best artist names in the country in Yolanda Be Cool and D-Cup - I mean, who doesn't like Pulp Fiction or breasts ... was it only natural that you guys collaborated?
Well if by “collaborated†you mean got drunk one night and wrote Americano, and if by natural you mean 'cosmetically enhanced', then yes, we would agree. It’s funny that in the middle of funked-out disco and party-tech house is dancefloor bombland.
What are you guys bringing up with your live show? Does it get sweaty?
Props, mimes, small people and a guy in a horse costume. Oh shit, no that's next week, I keep forgetting which week we're DJing and when we're doing that cabaret show for Elton John. Yes, now I remember. Huge room-shaking congas and lazer-synths, and plenty of sweat.
Catch Yolanda Be Cool and D-Cup at The Chalk Hotel on Sunday May 2 as part of Chalkfest celebrations AND NEVER LAND BAR MAY 22.
