With Brissy gigs coming up for Sydney duo The Morning Papers, one half of the band, Kristy Wilson, fills us in on what’s going on with the electro-pop gurus. Revealing big plans over the next year or so for the band.
“I think we’ll release an EP in the next 12 months definitely, which we’re hoping to put out with Wallflower Records. We’re still kind of defining the sound. I’ve moved from a country sound to an electro-pop sound.†That’s quite a swing, when asked to define the duo’s sound, Kristy says it’s pretty simple. “It’s primarily melodic pop music that we make using beats on the computer, electric guitar and synth.â€
In Brisbane they’ll be playing a combined set with World Champion, or in Kristy’s words “an electro-pop sing-a-longâ€. “We’ll be playing with World Champion and we kind of call it sing-a-long electro-pop and when we play together we use harmonies. Some people say the harmonies are a bit Simon and Garfunkel, so a bit folky combined with electric pop.â€
As you might expect from the above, Kristy says that The Morning Papers’ live show can be pretty unpredictable, but if you’re into pop there’ll be some great tunes. “You never know what to expect, it could be genius or it could be a train wreck. But punters can expect some great pop tunes and some really chilled tunes and you never know what World Champion will do on stage - I know he does a silly dance so be prepared.â€
There’s some wing-spreading going on too, with a recent trip to the Big Apple being a huge eye-opener for the band.
“Being in New York definitely had an influence on our music, really just by getting out of the area that we knew. I think it’s interesting because a lot of people there are doing the same things people in Sydney and Brisbane are doing, in terms of the folk scene. But I think you get lots of new ideas just from the art, the stores and all the different types of people.â€
The NYC trip certainly has them itching for more overseas work, but their debut EP is a priority too. “We definitely want to complete an EP and it’d be great to do another East Coast tour. It’d be awesome to get overseas again by any way we can, maybe going over to Europe or America again and just playing our music to people.
The Morning Papers are playing Ric’s on June 20 and Fete De la Musique at The Powerhouse on June 21.
