Station To Station
Tin Can Radio are an eclectic Brissy five-piece all set to release their debut self-titled EP. Jack Potter, the group's bassist, gave us all the details on how the record came together.
“We were trying to pool as many of the influences we have together into as few tracks as possible. One of the things we're all into is progression of ideas during a track so we go through two or three genres each song. It's all pretty high energy and a lot of fun,†Jack enthuses.
With the use of so many genres the Tin Can Radio boys find it difficult to describe their sound, but it does mean there's a little something for everybody.
“Our sound has a rock basis to it with a lot of electronic stuff over the top. Whatever you're into there'll be some element in one, two or maybe even three of the tracks that you'll like. Looking at where popular music is in Australia at the moment, I think we've got elements from almost every aspect of it. We all come from pretty different musical backgrounds and there's five songwriters in the band so we all have really varied output. The Foals have been the biggest one for me but there's also a lot of influences from artists like The Bug, Explosions in the Sky, Decoder Ring - they're pretty varied.â€
Their background's range from producing hip hop, to drum and bass, to punk to jazz. With such a variety of musical backgrounds and so many songwriters, I had to ask how they managed to pull it all together without seriously harming one another.
“If we have a clash of ideas - which does happen quite regularly - we just play each idea and work out how we can use both ideas, or we just trial different ideas in live settings to see what the best response is. All we really want to do when we write music is to get people up and dancing and just having a great time.â€
Well, if you're a fan, get excited! Aside from promoting their debut EP, Tin Can Radio are planning a tour in the near future.
“We're looking at touring Sydney, Melbourne and the north coast of Queensland later in the year and just trying to get this EP out and get people to hear it and listening to the music.â€
Tin Can Radio are launching their EP at The Hi-Fi on July 17.
