Ho’s approach to making music is a neat, sample-based dovetail with his approach to life and residency. He’s somewhat of a serial traveller around the globe, currently found in Indonesia. “Yes, I do get around. I haven't properly unpacked for a year and half now ... My wife got a job in Indonesia, so we decided to pack up and move for a few years. Luckily it is still quite close to Australia so I can come back for shows and work.â€
Work and play don’t seem to be two entirely polarised concepts for Unkle Ho; he plays a somewhat essential role in the operations of Elefant Traks.
“In the label, I handle the web stuff and do some design. I also work on royalty payments for our releases, I'm slowly mastering Excel to do them all.â€
He goes on to explain the Sydney-based label’s prospects in the ensuing few months. “Late last year, we thought this year was going to be pretty quiet, but now we find ourselves with four releases: Mista Savona's follow-up, Ozi Batla's first solo release, The Tongue's new one and a secret one which I can’t reveal just yet.â€
Rather than putting music to the side following his move to Indonesia, Unkle Ho has already established a musical project over there, becoming integrated into the live music scene.
“I've formed an Indonesian project with a local rapper and turntablist, so we do shows here and there. The Indonesian gig format is pretty different to Australia. There are normally heaps of acts, and they only play for 15 minutes. People will come up on stage and just look at what you are doing, it is distracting but endearing at the same time.â€
Unkle Ho will also be playing a local show later this week. He describes, in a little more depth, what the gig is involved with.
“The show is part of the Asia Pacific Triennial at the Gallery of Modern Art. People can see the exhibitions and then watch live performances. There are also some good acts playing such as Quan, Astronomy Class (on the same night as me) and Kamahl.â€
Alongside Astronomy Class, Unkle Ho plays GoMA as part of the Asia Pacific Triennial March 19.
