Copenhagen's Finest
They're Denmark's original party-starters who, along with Hot Chip and Mew, have pioneered the electro-clash sound around the world. Their unique blend of disco, pop and punk is sonically diverse and texturally adventurous, and with their latest release, 'The Plot', the trio continue to push stylistic boundaries.
Jeppe Kjellberg, Tomas Hoeffding and Tomas Barford, who met in their late twenties, came from very diverse musical backgrounds.
“We met in the winter of 2003. None of us had ever been involved in a large, serious band like WhoMadeWho. Everything about how this band is run is different to anything else we have experienced,†says front man Jeppe Kjellberg on the line from sub-zero Copenhagen.
Barford, the group's drummer, was mostly DJing and releasing house music. Bass player Hoeffding, played in rock band and Jeppe was playing improvised prog rock.
Their second album 'The Plot' is typically hard to pin down as it moves between electro-clash, pop and even trip-hop.
It is the group's collective approach that keeps their sound fresh.
“It's very much a collective process. Every time someone brings in a whole song it gets deconstructed immediately and rebuilt with the other two members.â€
For Jeppe it is the noises of the world around him that most inspire his songwriting.
“There are so many dissonant sounds to modern life and we really play to that. The idea of our music is to use organic sounds, like the sounds you would hear in the city, not just classic guitar chords. I'm starting to play the keyboard and the vocoder a lot more too.â€
WhoMadeWho extend that collective philosophy beyond the band too.
“When we toured with Hot Chip in 2006 we said we'd do a swap mix at some point. That's where they do a mix of our song and we do a mix of there's and no one pays anyone anything for it, it's just a clean swap.
“Josh Homme was a different story. We didn't know him at all at that point, he had just picked up 'Space For Rent' and was playing it at shows and people started telling us about it. We met him in Copenhagen and had a chat and he's a super cool person. I'm honoured, I'm just very happy to share the music and have other people play it.
“We're not living in a time where you can control your copyright and have your music sold only on vinyl or CD, so you just need to share in the new era.â€
