But things change fast, though, and Potter's sound has evolved substantially in the short period since that release. “There have been some pretty dramatic changes with my new music,†she confirms down the phone line from Melbourne. “I guess I've always listened to folk music and black music. Sonically, black music - new school soul and things like that - has always been a huge passion for me, but I haven't ever really had the confidence to write in that style because I've never felt like I've been able to own it.
“But just from working with some of my other bands that exist in that genre has given me the confidence to now write in that style, and that's really my passion. So, I guess I'm hoping to blend black music, folk music and storytelling, which I think soul music already does anyway.â€
The new material has seen Potter collaborate more freely with her band, and it's a process she's been enjoying.
“It's hugely refreshing, especially because I'm really close to everyone in my band and I admire them all as musicians. I'm really tolerant of working with others; I'm naturally a collaborator. It was unusual for me to start as a solo artist and that's why I'm not staying there, because as a person I'm naturally a collaborator.â€
The new material is getting a good run through on the band's current east coast tour, which returns north later this week.
“It's been a ball,†laughs Potter. “It's the first time we've taken our music properly out of the city and played to strangers and that's a great thing. It's good preparation for the recording too. One gig is worth five rehearsals, I reckon. To have four shows every week for the next month is just awesome.â€
And while Potter will be recording a fresh live album during her homecoming show, there's plenty else to look forward to with the northern gigs.
“People can expect a lot of new songs and some revamped older material from the mini album. They can expect to go on a bit of a journey from really upbeat songs to stripped back, totally still moments. It's definitely a very dynamic set.â€
