While they’ve technically followed all those steps, Ballarat band Gold Fields have played around with the formula and given their recent success, it seems to have worked perfectly.
“Four of us went to high school in Ballarat, and myself and the lead singer Mark (Robert Fuller) were in bands together from Grade 8 … but we were in bands after that doing our own stuff,†band member Vinci (Vin) Andanar says.
“(But) we formed after a catch up in February last year … and we had a couple of rehearsals in Melbourne but we sort of didn’t get far … we got together (again) in March and April and started writing new songs. We were recording a couple songs then too and it took off from there!â€
That’s a bit of an understatement, with the five-piece – which also includes Luke Peldys, Rob Clifton and Ryan D’Sylva – steadily building buzz and acclaim with their singles ‘The Woods’ and ‘Treehouse’. To top things off, they were also were recently announced to take their place on the Parklife bill.
“We have done a few festival shows before; we were lucky enough to win the Falls Unearthed competition last year and we played Field Day after that, but this will be our first nationally touring festival,†he says.
“We are super, super excited. We found out we would be playing in December last year, and it was really hard not to tell everyone we know. Being part of a festival like that will be something really different, we will hopefully get to meet a few different bands.â€
What is remarkable, though, is the fact the band have managed to achieve all this without officially having their music released, although an EP is expected to be out “just in time for Parklifeâ€.
“No, we don’t have anything out yet for people to get, we always get people coming up and asking us about that after our shows,†he says. “But we have finished recording an EP; it will be three songs and a remix. It will be released in August or September this year. We are also working on an album, so there will be a lot of stuff out soon.â€
Gold Fields play Parklife at the Brisbane Riverstage Saturday October 1.
