Now at 20, Matt Corby is rid of his image as a 16-year-old talent contestant, eager to make a name for himself and build on his success.
“I’ve been living in London for most of the time, cruising around with the boys from Communion, which is the label that I’m with,†he says.
“Then I’m coming back to play these shows in Australia. It’s been cool, the last six months I’ve been sort of cruising around, but it’s all good.â€
Immersed in the London folk scene, he’s been welcomed into the Communion family - the independent label / lovechild of Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble.
“It’s like an extended family. All the guys who are signed to it are incredible; it’s such a good thing to be a part of. Being in the same sort of arena as those guys is cool.
“It started as this sort of folk movement through London a couple of years ago and has gotten a whole bunch of attention lately. All the crew who are a part of it are all exceptional people, it’s a really cool thing to be a part of and a really good community too.â€
With this platform provided, Matt hasn’t wasted time. Three EPs into his career already and with an album in the works, it’s no surprise he’s earned a reputation as a focussed and prolific artist.
“I think another EP would be cool because I want to release it in the States and the UK. I still haven’t released a proper EP in the UK yet.
“Then, after that, we’re going to get cracking with the record. It’s just been slow moving, which is cool, because I’m not trying to pump out these records – I just want them to be right.â€
Even before his ‘Idol’ exposure, Corby quit school at 13 to pursue a career in music. It seems to be working out for him.
“My outlook is a little different, but I’m still the same kid that just wants to play music and ditch school.â€
