veteran turntablist continues to push quality music; and after more than 20 years in the profession, has earned the right to speak his mind.
The three-time Queensland State DMC DJ Champion, and former Ministry Of Sound Taipei resident, has played most of Brisbane's night spots in his career.
“I've played a lot of records that I thought I probably wouldn't ever play in this country, anywhere. It's good; you don't have that label over yourself like, 'he's a hip hop DJ' or 'he's a house DJ'.â€
After living in the UK for the past two years - where he toured extensively both as a solo act and with J-Zone as Extra Chee$e - the prolific DJ and tireless supporter of music has returned to Brisbane disappointed with the state of the local scene.
“I was actually shocked when I ended up back in the Valley after coming back from the UK,†he says. “There are a lot of good venues out there still [but] the level of people’s intelligence when it comes to music is fairly insulting. But I don't really think that has to do with people themselves [but] with the state of where music is.
“I've always said this and I stand by it; I'd rather spend my money to go see a DJ that doesn't have the skills that some of these other DJs may possess, but that has a wicked record collection.â€
About to kick-off a new residency at West End's Rumpus Room alongside long-time friend and collaborator, DJ Damage, Sheep extends the invitation to one and all to come on down and enjoy real music provided by two of Brisbane's finest.
“If I was asked to name three of Brisbane's best scratchers - that aren't from my generation - I'd have a hard time,†he says. “[But] when you talk about my generation, you've got people like Freestyle, people like Damage, people like Katch and Angus (the late DJ Bribe); all these people who really have their hearts in it.â€
DJ Sheep plays the last Saturday of every month at Rumpus Room. He also supports Ghostface Killah at The Hi-Fi June 28 and Delta at the Jubilee Hotel July 4.
